Penile Adhesions Removal

It is a surgical procedure to remove penile adhesions, i.e. abnormal adhesions (synechiae) that have formed on the penis.

Penile adhesions are abnormal adhesions that form between the glans and the foreskin, often as a result of inflammatory, infectious or traumatic processes. These adhesions can restrict the natural movement of the foreskin, cause discomfort during erection or sexual intercourse, and increase the risk of recurrent infections due to the accumulation of smegma. When synechiae become symptomatic or problematic, debridement may be necessary, a minor surgical procedure that involves separating the adhesions. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, with gentle dissection of the adherent areas using surgical instruments. After removal of the synechiae, it is essential to maintain good intimate hygiene and apply any emollient or antibiotic products to prevent new adhesions and infections.

Complications are rare but may include recurrence of the adhesions, minor bleeding or post-operative infections. To reduce the risk of recurrence, it is important to identify and treat the underlying cause, such as a chronic infection or persistent irritation. Prevention is based on proper hygiene, with regular and gentle washing, avoiding aggressive products, and prompt management of any inflammation or infection. In some cases, especially when the adhesions are associated with severe phimosis, circumcision may be considered as a permanent solution.
