An important live prosthetic surgery course recently took place in Rome at the Quisisana Clinic, featuring Professor Gabriele Antonini, recognised as one of the world’s leading experts in the implantation of three-component hydraulic penile prostheses.
The event represented a high-level scientific and educational milestone, attended by international specialists, including Turkish doctors Yasar Basaga and Zulfu Sertkaya from Istanbul, who were keen to learn the most advanced techniques in this field of urological surgery. During the live session, five hydraulic penile prosthesis implants were performed on complex patients, including cases involving outcomes of radical prostatectomy, severe fibrosis, and significant penile curvatures. The procedures also included the placement of prosthetic reservoirs in ectopic sites, demonstrating the versatility and expertise of the team.
The surgery stood out for being extremely rapid, minimally invasive, and effective: all procedures were completed within a single morning, without complications, haematomas, or post-operative issues. Professor Antonini utilised the infrapubic technique, developed by Paul Perito of Miami, which allows for a less invasive approach compared to the traditional peno-scrotal technique. This method not only reduces surgical time but also provides superior aesthetic and functional results. One of the most significant aspects highlighted during the course is the possibility for patients to begin early activation of the prosthesis: as early as 7 days after surgery, thanks to the absence of scrotal incisions, patients can manipulate the pump with ease. The first sexual intercourse can take place approximately 14 days after the operation.
All patients were discharged just 24 hours after surgery in excellent clinical condition and without any complications. This data confirms the effectiveness and safety of the technique used, as well as the high standards of the host facility. The Turkish colleagues were deeply impressed by Professor Antonini’s technical skill, precision, and speed. The experience gained during the course has motivated them to introduce the infrapubic technique in Turkey, marking a significant step towards the international dissemination of this methodology. Once again, Professor Antonini confirms his status as a key figure in functional urological surgery and, specifically, in penile prosthesis implantation. For patients seeking the best aesthetic and functional outcomes, Rome today represents a destination of excellence thanks to his experience and competence.
This event highlights not only technological and surgical innovation but also the value of international collaboration in the advancement of modern medicine.
