Medicina 33 – Antonini and Martini: Prostatectomy and Prosthesis at San Filippo Neri in Rome
Rome, 11 May 2025 – On 12 May, the historic Medicina 33 programme on Tg2 will broadcast a report dedicated to a new and innovative collaboration between two leading figures in Italian urology: Professor Marco Martini, director of the Urology Unit at San Filippo Neri Hospital in Rome, and Professor Gabriele Antonini, a highly experienced urologist-andrologist who also works at the same facility.
The report will focus on the new combined approach that involves the simultaneous implantation of a three-component hydraulic penile prosthesis during robotic radical prostatectomy, a procedure that represents a real revolution in functional urological surgery.
This innovative strategy has been developed for patients with locally advanced prostate cancer who are scheduled to undergo prostate removal with a high probability of developing post-operative erectile dysfunction. The simultaneous implantation of the prosthesis during surgery allows for the preservation and early recovery of sexual function, with a positive impact on the patient’s quality of life and psychological health.
Dr Antonini points out that after prostatectomy, in the absence of targeted interventions, the penis tends to shorten by about half a centimetre per year. In addition, the long and often frustrating rehabilitation process traditionally required for the recovery of erectile function can lead to depression, demotivation and a deterioration in the emotional and sexual sphere.
Thanks to this new surgical synergy between oncological urology and functional andrology, a concrete and effective solution is proposed, aimed not only at treating the disease but also at the overall well-being of the patient, in a modern and integrated vision of medicine.
