Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) can cause severe difficulty urinating as you age. About 50 percent of men will experience a dramatic change in urination during their lifetime due to this benign growth.

The surgical therapy of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), based on endoscopic resection of the prostate (TURP) for the past twenty years, is experiencing a real revolution with the advent of laser technology. In fact, the non-trivial percentage of post-operative complications linked to TURP (persistent macrohematuria, post-TURP syndrome, anemisation) has led to an ever-increasing interest in the industry in the search for the ideal method for resolving obstruction due to prostatic hyperplasia, a system whose main characteristics should be minimal invasiveness, the absence of intraoperative fluid reabsorption problems, the absence of bleeding, the possibility of total removal of the prostatic adenoma, the short hospitalization and the reproducibility of the results.

The application of laser technology to prostate surgery represents the most significant improvement and approach to the ideal intervention in the last ten years.

The new standard for the surgical treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy is the photoselective vaporization of the prostate with GREEN LASER, more commonly called

“green light laser prostatectomy”. It is a minimally invasive procedure that results in notable improvements in urinary symptoms.

A thin fiber is inserted into the urethra through a cystoscope, an instrument that allows the doctor to examine the bladder and prostate. The fiber carries green laser energy that quickly evaporates and removes prostate tissue. The urologist is able to safely visualize and control the treatment area, adapting it to your anatomy and individual needs. As the prostate tissue is vaporized and removed a wide channel is created: urinary flow is immediately restored and urinary symptoms are relieved. The green light laser used in vaporization has a wavelength that is absorbed by hemoglobin, which is present in red blood cells. Because of this, tissue that has blood in it (such as the prostate) is selectively vaporized. Once the prostate capsule is reached, the vaporization stops and the procedure is complete, in fact the prostatic capsule is fibrous and does not have hemoglobin and is therefore protected by the laser. The ADVANTAGE over TURP is that the prostatic tissue is selectively vaporized, rather than cut. In fact, when the prostate tissue is cut in TURP, the prostate bleeds much more profusely. On the other hand, during photo-selective vaporization of the prostate, the tissue does not bleed.

The GreenLight laser exploits the ability of Lithium Triborate crystals to vaporize tissues with the consequent advantage of a minimally invasive, bloodless operation, in the absence of problems from reabsorption of liquids, with a short hospital stay.   • treatment of BPH with greater safety thanks to the intraoperative use of saline solution (minimal or no risk of fluid reabsorption);

  • possibility of treating patients with pacemakers since no electricity is used;
